The Daichi — 大地
Daichi means “great earth” in Japanese, and this bed is built to honour it. The largest and most ambitious piece in the Yakisugi Series, the Daichi is a permanent garden installation, not a temporary planter.
The Craft
Every Daichi begins as SPF Select lumber, individually fire-charred using the Shou Sugi Ban technique. The char is wire-brushed to remove surface scaling and reveal the natural grain of the wood beneath, a process that simultaneously enhances the beauty and exposes the vitrified carbon layer that gives SSB its legendary durability. The entire piece is then sealed with pure tung oil, a food-safe finish with zero chemical additives that penetrates deep into the grain and locks out moisture.
No treated lumber. No chemical preservatives. Nothing that will leach into your soil or compromise your harvest.
The Engineering
The Daichi’s U-shaped form is designed for access from three sides, making intensive planting, tending, and harvesting natural and comfortable. Corner and centre posts extend approximately 8 inches below grade, anchoring the bed against soil pressure and preventing the bowing and drift that affects surface-set raised beds over time. This is a bed designed to still be standing, and still be square, in twenty years.
